In 1937 a brilliant, up-and-coming young scientist named Charles Limprecht found a strange genetic deformity in the make-up of a corpse he was researching on. The deformity was uncanny and he could find no explanation for it. And thus he was intrigued. Charles learned everything he could about the man whose corpse had posed so many questions.
The dead man's name was Steven Thomas and he was, by all accounts, a completely normal man. However, as Charles would come to know, there was more to Steven than initially let on. Steven was a member of a distinct group of genetically mutated supernatural beings. As Charles delved further into the world of the supernatural he found that there were so many people just like Steven out there in the world, locked away in hiding for fear of being judged for their "gifts".
An upstanding, generous, and by all accounts good man, Charles founded the city of Sanctuary. A beautiful clearing in the middle of a vast forest in the North American Midwest, Sanctuary became a safe haven for those with "specialties" to become a community. The city quickly grew, developing into a successful and bustling area popular in both trade and tourism due to the beautiful landscape and supple resources.
And at the top of Sanctuary Hill, at the base of which the city of Sanctuary was built, Charles Limprecht erected a large academy. Sanctuary Academy became one of the top boarding schools in the world, hailed for it's devotion to the success of its students. Admission to the school, however, is hard to come by. Following the basis of Charles Limprecht's ideals, the academy accepts only students aged 11-18 who were born with or have acquired in some way supernatural powers. The city, too, homes very few "normal" humans. Those without supernatural powers living in either the academy or the town are primarily family members of those with supernatural powers or are in close cooperation with the community of Sanctuary. Charles Limprecht died an early death in 1957, the first headmaster of Sanctuary Academy, and his predecessors have striven to honor his ideals. The current headmaster, Jeremiah Gold, believes strongly in that Sanctuary and its academy have the ability to honor their namesake in welcoming anyone "different" or "weird". Those that are "strange" and who had been judged for their abilities are welcomed with open arms and Sanctuary Academy has truly become a beacon of hope for the underground world of the supernatural.
